I think one of the most recognized site in Kyoto is Kinkakuji (金閣寺), or the Golden Pavilion. Although what we see isn't the original building, it's said to be a close copy. There is an entrance fee of $5, but that is typical of most temples. I went 2 times during my time in Japan, and both times (in May and August) were fairly busy, but both times I was able to get pictures of just the pavilion. The gold color reflects off the water and the bright green trees surrounding made it even more beautiful.
